Multicentre clinical epidemiological study of female breast cancer in a multi-ethnic Malaysian setting (Epi-Can)

General Information
A multicentre retrospective cohort study will be conducted in 6 of the Ministry of Health hospitals in Malaysia and coordinated by Institute for Clinical Research. Medical record of patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer from participating clinical sites who meet eligibility criteria will be reviewed. This project will be a collaboration between ICR and MOH hospitals. The results of this study will aid to observe secular changes as well as long term outcomes for breast cancer patients in real world clinical practice.
This study aimed to understand the nature of breast cancer patients’ presentation, diagnosis, treatment, treatment induced cardiovascular complications and survival. The specific objectives are;
1. To describe the characteristics of patients with breast cancer and management of the disease
2. To identify independent prognostic factors for breast cancer survival
3. To assess the following survival measures among breast cancer patients:
a) Overall survival (OS)
b) Relative survival (RS)
c) Disease Free Survival (DFS)
d) Cause Specific Survival (CSS)
4. To assess cancer therapy related cardiac complication
The expected study outcomes are to evaluate their overall survival, disease-free survival, breast cancer cause-specific mortality and relative survival while describing the variation across age, socioeconomic, geographic regions, ethnic differences and its trend over time in Malaysia.
A minimum of 6130 breast cancer patients are required to answer the study objectives
The duration taken for this study would include field training and data collection is 2 years. The data analysis and reporting are expected to take 6 months. This study is expected to be completed by December 2024.
